July 7, 2018: Luckenback

July 7, 2018

Luckenbach – who hasn’t heard of this dance hall?  It’s located in, that’s right, Luckenbach, thirteen miles from Fredricksburg (Gillespie County.) Population 3. Luckenbach was established in 1849. How it got the name can be found here.

I bet you start singing before you get out of the vehicle.

“Let’s go to Luckenbach, Texas
With Waylon and Willie and the boys
This successful life we’re livin’
Got us feuding like the Hatfields and McCoys
Between Hank Williams’ pain songs and
Newberry’s train songs and Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas ain’t nobody feelin’ no pain”

There’s a store, cafe and several areas for listening to music, both inside and out. Pickers circle starts at 1 p.m. and is free.  We were fortunate to hear Drew Moreland & the Neon Hustle. They have great dance music. The floor was pretty empty, with only an occasional couple sharing the floor with us.  Unlike Gruene, this floor is nice place to dance. The dance hall is open to the air, side windows propped open with those trusty 2 x 4’s.  They have an air blower that helps move air on the dance floor. Families, singles and the occasional bridal party show up.  Just don’t expect to have anyone you don’t know dance with you. On an earlier trip with a friend I asked someone to dance and they were so terrified they just shook their hand in front of their face, looked away from me, then got up and LEFT THE AREA! I mean it…they Drove Away!  Their loss – it was a nice two step song.  That’s (one reason) I like bringing a dance partner.20180707 At Luckenbach

We walked over the bridge to the fire pit (not lit) avoiding the fire ant mounds, then over to look at the hats and other items for sale. Watched a little boy try to pet the resident birds.

Sometimes they are taking refuge under the tables in the dance area, so watch out before you sit down!  There’s a small cemetery on the property if you want to read the headstones. You’ll find them under a nice shade tree near the loop road.  It’s a long, windy road to get here, so if you come for a night concert be careful going home – there are critters out there!

After dancing awhile and people watching, we left to get ready for our dance at Twin Sisters Dance hall.

We stopped here again during a Dance hall Road Trip in March, 2019. Last time we had to watch out for the chickens under the tables. This time we had to watch out for the pig eating potato chips! We enjoyed hearing Weldon Henson this trip.
