Freiheit Country Store, established in 1889, can be found at 2157 FM 1101, New Braunfels. Originally established as a meeting place for the community in the middle of miles of cornfields, now there are retail spaces and hotels all around. It’s an outdoor venue – really fun in the Texas humidity – but worth it to hear the music that’s heard here. They have a restaurant in an adjacent building with fabulous burgers. Restaurant is open at 11 a.m. seven days a week. The bar is enclosed with air conditioning and friendly bar staff. Like most of the places we’ve visited, the space is available for rental.

Reservations (830-625-9400) for the covered seating is recommended. They were getting set up for Billy Matta’s evening show when we arrived early in the afternoon. The dance floor and covered area can hold about 200 people, with another 400 in the outside space. Even though the day we visited had 78 percent humidity, the ceiling fans and occasional breeze kept it pleasant under the covered roof for a quick two step on the dance pad.

The covered dance floor is concrete and fairly spacious.

The Walther band is the house band, and can be heard every Wednesday evening.

To help with the glide on the concrete, they use dance floor wax, which I found sitting in a crevice in a back table.

The multiple antlered heads on the rafters gives the now closed Henry’s Hideout a run for their money.

A true family venue – they have a kid zone that’s enclosed by a wire fence.

There is a fire pit for cold days and plenty of picnic tables for outside enjoyment.

An outdoor bathroom is found near the gravel parking lot.

It would have been great to hear Billy Mata here, but we already had plans to visit Martinez Social Club in San Antonio that night. We’ll keep this venue on our list for future music enjoyment. https://www.freiheitcountrystore.net/ is the website if you want to keep up with the upcoming bands. Maybe we’ll see you at one soon!
