In The Mood Ballroom: Visited 4-14-21

On my day trip to Temple, I was hoping to find an old dance hall where we might dance someday. I found In The Mood Dancehall with an internet search. Located at 13 S Main, Temple the building exterior was fantastic. Two stories with an upper balcony. An adjoining building to the right had the ballroom name on the door as well. The interior looked dark, but that never stops us from trying the handle and knocking.

There was a friendly young woman at a laptop just inside the door. She informed me the building had been sold and would soon be a food market, similar to one in Greune. She was gracious enough to let me walk around the lower floors. The upper level was rented out to tenants and unavailable for me to snoop.

The floor was a wonderful wood.

A long wooden stage area was situated along the front wall. A smaller, circular stage, offset with red curtains, was in the far back.

Long, red velvet curtains hung on one wall. The tall wooden doors separated the ballroom from the classroom.

There was a small bar area in the back of the building.

The ceiling was pressed tin.

I was told this part of the building was used for events. The smaller area next door was where the previous owner held dance lessons. At one time Temple High school held their proms here.

The building originally was a department store, named McLellans. An insert just outside the front door still sports the name. The upper levels have housed lawyers and dentists, or been used as storage.

The building held a quiet, stately air. I was sad to have missed an opportunity to dance there, but grateful I could walk the floors and feel the history. I wish the new owners much success.
