American Legion Hall #83, 4401 E St. Elmo Rd, Austin, can be contacted at 512-442-2896. We stopped in on a Saturday and met Jean, Sam and John and had a delightful visit. We’ve always found folks at VFW and American Legion Halls to be very open and friendly. This hall did not disappoint. A few minutes into our visit we were invited to John’s 75th birthday celebration at 3 pm that afternoon where they were serving enchiladas! We had other plans (a few more halls to see) and didn’t make it back in time. Still – Happy Birthday John!!

The post was named for Paul Knebel, a World War 1 Army veteran. The post was first housed in a wood building at the corner of San Jacinto and 12th, moved to South Lamar, to the old Austin Engineers Club building at 602 West 7th, then to it’s present location on East St. Elmo in 1979.

The canteen has burgers on Monday, $3 beer, pool, and companionship other days of the week, and bingo Sunday, Monday at 7pm and Wednesdays at 9 am. Once a month they have a fundraiser, selling pansies, mums and other plants.

Jean let us into the back area where they rent the hall. We played some music on the phone and danced on the concrete floor to the confusion of Dan (I think I have his name correct.) He was in the kitchen preparing the enchiladas and hadn’t been clued in on the reason we were there.

It’s a nice place. If you are in the area, stop by, play some pool, grab a cold drink and have some great conversation.

We want to say Thank You to all the members of the American Legion Hall and their families for your service.
